The Dock Wayuu Logo: Created together – connected together

The Dock Wayuu logo tells a story of encounter: it is the result of a special competition that brought together young people from the Wayuu community in La Guajira (Colombia) and an illustrator from Berlin.

From the beginning, the aim was not just to design a beautiful symbol for the website, but to create an emblem that makes the connection between worlds visible — between Wayuu culture and people in Europe. The result is a logo that expresses respect and embodies the spirit of Dock Wayuu: exchange, visibility, and dialogue on equal terms.

A creative process with recognition for everyone

Children and young people from the Wayuu community were invited to share their ideas — whether drawn, woven, digital, or crafted in their own way. Five designs were submitted and appreciated by a small jury.

To ensure that every participant received recognition, prizes were awarded in different categories:

  • 1st place (winning design): 200,000 COP
  • 2nd place (creativity prize): 100,000 COP
  • Recognition for all other participants: 50,000 COP each

This made one thing clear: every contribution matters — regardless of the final outcome.

The language of symbols

The final logo combines central symbols of Wayuu culture, deeply rooted in their tradition:

  • The spider (Wale’kerü) – teacher of weaving, symbol of origin, creativity, and the transmission of knowledge.
  • The zigzag pattern (Kanaasü) – traditional motif symbolizing paths, movement, and life’s journey; interpreted here also as rays of the sun.
  • The sun – symbol of light, life, energy, and cosmic order.

The colors carry additional meaning: red reflects its symbolic power in Wayuu culture, while blue represents the water that connects Colombia and Europe — transatlantic and unifying.

The Berlin-based illustrator developed the final design in close reference to Wayuu symbols. The result is a logo that honors Wayuu cultural depth while building a bridge to the European context.

Created through dialogue

The competition was organized in collaboration with Félix Montiel and his foundation Fundación Amüliajü Wayúu in La Guajira. Thus, the logo is not only a graphic mark but also the result of genuine collaboration.
